Michael Giovanniello, M.D.

Dr. Giovanniello is the co-founder and Fellowship Program Director of The SMART Clinic™. He is a Board Certified specialist in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, Pain Medicine and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Dr. Giovanniello is also fellowship trained in interventional spinal techniques and pain management.

Dr. Giovanniello diagnoses and treats all neuromusculoskeletal disorders with special interests in aggressive non-operative care of back and neck pain, sports medicine, and industrial medicine. He uses the latest techniques including x-ray guided spinal injections, minimally invasive endoscopic spine surgery, electrodiagnostics, comprehensive rehabilitation programs for the diagnosis and management of these disorders. Dr. Giovanniello lectures and publishes locally and nationally on topics in his field. He has co-authored a chapter addressing the use of electrodiagnostic testing for low back pain as well as performed clinical research with x-ray guided spinal injections. Dr. Giovanniello has served as an instructor at multiple national courses for interventional spinal procedures.

Dr. Giovanniello earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Cornell University in 1990. During his undergraduate years, he participated in NCAA Division I Cross-Country and Track. Following his studies at Cornell University, he went on to The State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine to earn his medical degree in 1994. After medical school, he did his speciatly training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Dr. Giovanniello was selected Chief Resident for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation during his senior year. Upon completion of his residency training, Dr. Giovanniello was an associate physician for The Center for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Phoenix, Arizona. Here, he practiced musculoskeletal medicine and served as an on-site industrial medicine physician for Motorola Corporation. Following two years in private practice, he diversified and broadened his practice by completing a fellowship in Interventional Spinal Techniques and Pain Management. After completion of his fellowship, he co-founded The SMART Clinic™ in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2001.
